Smart TV vs Normal TV

The differences between smart TV and normal TV were drastic in the yesteryears. But how much difference could there be in 2019 with all the wide varieties of external gadgets available in the market?. Let’s take a look at the topic in detail.

Can we enjoy the benefits of a smart TV on a normal TV?

The question looks odd but the answer is Yes. We can convert our non-smart TV to smart TV by using devices like the Chromecast or the  Amazon Fire TV Stick. The Chromecast is a device from Google that requires only a normal TV with an HDMI port. The device enables the normal Tv to connect to the internet through it. All the main video streaming networks like Youtube and Netflix can be streamed on your TV using the Chromecast. This tiny add on device acts as a wireless link between your smartphone and your TV. So who needs a smart TV when you can convert your normal TV into one.

This small tech-hack can save you a lot of money if you work on a budget. Usually, the price difference between a smart TV and a non-smart TV is around 15K-20K (INR), but the device like Chromecast or Fire TV Stick will cost you only 3k-5K.

If you are on a tight budget?

The best thing you can do if you want a TV but you are on a tight budget is that not buying a budget-oriented smart TV. The problem with low cost/ entry-level smart TV is that you will not get the seamless smart TV experience. It usually has some basic apps like Netflix, YouTube, etc but doesn’t have a robust app store. This limits your experience a lot and after some time you feel like you are using a very outdated system.

The case of a higher-end smart TV is different. It has a fully-fledged app store and supports many apps. So depending on the money you are willing to spend on a TV, you choose either one. The bottom line is to never choose low-cost smart TVs instead of a quality normal TV in 2019.

Problems of smart TV in general

There are pros as well as cons associated with a smart TV. As we already covered, Smart TV costs significantly more compared to a normal TV. But one common issue with Smart TV is it gets outdated very soon. After a couple of years, your TV will not support many apps or at least the new features that they will be able to provide. Also, not all apps are compatible with smart TVs. We can solve this particular problem associated with low budget smart TVs if you buy normal TV and use the Chromecast or the Amazon Fire TV stick.

Advantages of using ChromeCast or Amazon Fire TV Stick

First of all, these are devices come in the size of a small flash drive that can be easily plugged into a TV’s HDMI port. This can be connected to your home WiFi and smartphone and allows you to screen your content from your mobile phone to TV. It is like your smartphone got a big display, due to which there are some advantages over smart TV.

  • It is very easy to install and use.
  • These devices don’t get obsolete. Here you are using a smartphone for screening your content. The smartphone in itself is not directly linked to hardware or software on your TV. So these devices will not get outdated in a short period of time. Suppose if tomorrow, Amazon releases a 4K version of the Amazon Fire TV stick, you can use it instead of paying a huge amount to replace your TV.
  • It is cheap compared to the price of smart TV.

If you are looking forward to a TV for your home and have a limited budget, go with non-smart TV. You can buy devices like Chromcast to get the smart TV experience very cheaply.

One thing you have to make sure before buying a TV is that it should have enough amount of HDMI ports. For example, if your TV has only two HDMI ports and both are engaged you might find it difficult to use devices like Chromecast.
