There are secret codes available on every Android phone for various purposes from finding it IMEI number to factory resetting the device. You can avail of information about the phone’s hardware using these codes and they do not require a network connection. The codes provided in this article is not meant for basic users. Do not try these out and damage your phone if you are not particularly familiar with the Android phones.

Some codes are specific to certain brands and won’t work on others where some are universal for all Android phones around the world. Entering the code through the dial pad is a simple procedure and can be done without the internet.

Finding IMEI number

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a unique identification number for every phone that comes for sale in the market. It is there for security reasons and is exchanged to the network whenever the phone tries to connect to it.
To check for the IMEI number of your phone which is labeled inside your phone in any case, dial *#06#. In some phones, you would have to press the dial key after entering the code. The IMEI number will then be displayed as shown in the figure below.

Info menu about your phone

The hidden information menu of the phone will have details about your phone, its battery, the usage statistics, information about Wi-Fi facility on your phone like its status, configuration, etc. The most common code used to obtain this information is *#*#4636#*#*. Given below is how the hidden info menu would appear once you type in the code.

 

Information about camera

To obtain hidden information about your camera, you can use the code *#*#34971539#*#*. It will show information like the firmware versions and the firmware update counts. If it shows the option to update the camera firmware, never go through with it as you may find your camera to render useless afterward. It may be needed to be taken to a service center to get it back to the working mode.

PDA software version

To find the build version of your android phones, you can check the PDA using the code *#*#1234#*#*. If the current build for your phone is shown as GINGERBREAD.XXLA6, then the “XXLA6” part of the given is the PDA version of the ROM. The XX part is the region code that stands for European countries. In the case of India, the XX will be replaced by DD.

Phone Network Lock status

Dialing the code *#7465625# will tell the phone network lock status of your phone. It will show information about network lock, subset lock and SP lock and iff all attributes are set to OFF, then your phone is fully unlocked. The menu will look something like the picture given below.

MAC Address

Dialing the code *#*#232338#*#* will open up a menu showing the MAC address. It may not work on every Android phone out there. You can always check it from the settings if this shortcut fails.

Test Mode

Dialing the code *#*#197328640#*#*  will open up the menu as shown in the picture below. This is the service test mode or test mode. In some cases, the phone app might crash after pressing dial, however, this happens a lot. This mode provides details like Cell ID, CDMA status, etc. You can click on the options for diagnosis. 

Wi-Fi Test

To check the Wi-Fi status, you can dial the code *#*#232339#*#* and a menu like the one shown below will pop up and you can check the status of your wi-fi module. You can use the menu button to start various tests.

 

Field Test

This test is used to identify the signal strength that the phone is able to pick up.  Dialing the code *#*#7262626#*#* will activate the field test. With the results of the test, you can choose to install a signal boosting system on your phone.
