It’s been almost 3 years since Redmi note3, a mid-range Android smartphone powered by 1.8 GHz Snapdragon 650 with 2/3 GB ram hits the market. The smartphone was an all-time hit and satisfied millions of users worldwide. Xioami has provided countless updates over the past 3 years be it security patches, bug fixes or MIUI version updates or the MIUI 9 upgrade. But what’s most surprising is its recent official MIUI update to 9.6.2 version which brought the most awaited split-screen feature to the Redmi Note 3.

It was earlier spread that the smartphone won’t be getting split-screen feature because the device was still running on Android 6/Marshmallow as the split-screen usually requires Android 7 Nougat kernel. But It seems Xioami has incorporated the split-screen even into Marshmallow as per new update. As the screenshot shows, the android version still remains at 6.0.1 MMB29M which is Marshmallow but the MIUI version got upgraded to 9.6.2.0.

I have also included the screenshot of the complete changelog which will give a better idea of what changed in new version. As you can see, two major changes provided in the update is:

  1. Shortcut for split-screen in recents.
  2. You can uninstall apps from settings app now

Of course, there are other changes like battery usage improvements and bug fixes, it seems like this update mainly focuses on bringing the split-screen feature to Redmi Note 3.

How to use the split screen feature in Redmi Note 3

Many of you have already familiar with how split screen works in android. But for those who don’t know, here’s a brief explanation of split screen feature in Android and how to use it on your smartphone.

As of now, the split-screen feature allows you to work on two apps simultaneously on your phone screen. If you are wondering how even this is possible, it splits the screen vertically into two screens and you can run an app above and one below.

The advantage here is, for example, if you are listening to something in youtube and want to reply to a chat in WhatsApp or check another app, it is possible to do both simultaneously without quitting/minimizing the Youtube app. Also, you can adjust the size of the screens just by sliding the slider up or down.

The major advantage is that it saves your time. You can continue listening to Youtube and reply to the message instead of minimizing the app, going to WhatsApp then replying and coming back. On the negative side, not all of the apps are supported in split screen. I have tried, Youtube, WhatsApp it works perfectly fine, although Mi music app did not work.

I have recorded the screen using the split screen in Redmi Note3 and sharing below. Please check it out and post further queries and your valuable feedback as comments.
