It is not very rare that people want to access websites that are blocked by your school, office or the worst case by your ISP. Some of those websites are important, unable to access them will cost you some times. But you always hear about VPN’s these circumstances but you don’t know you-you would set up one?. Well, if you have a Xiaomi device with MIUI running, you don’t have to download all those ad-filled free VPN apps. You can set up VPN in your own device and surprisingly MIUI 99 has native support for VPN. Let’s check out how to access blocked websites easily by adding VPN to your Redmi devices such as Redmi Note 3 or Redmi Note 4 or even the new arrivals like Redmi Note 5 pro because it’s all running MIUI 9.

I am going to show you how to get a free yet completely legit VPN in your phone which you can set up in a few minutes. There are many VPN services available, some of them are free but slow in service and the paid ones give uninterrupted and fast service. The idea of this post is to give you the best among free VPNs so that you can set up on your phone easily and use it to bypass any restrictions to access certain websites.

VpnBook is one such free VPN service that provides free VPN servers. As our first step to connecting to VpnBook, search “vpnbook” in google and open their website. You should be able to find out their free VPN server names for different countries such as Europe, Canada, US etc. As an Android device, we have to go with the PPTP protocol.

Once you are on the website, click on PPTP and OpenVPN (No registration required) and it will take you to a page where you can access all the free VPN servers for different countries. At the end of it, you should see the username and password for the servers as well.

Steps to setup VPN in MIUI 9

To add a VPN account in your device, go to Settings > under WIRELESS & NETWORKS tap More and select VPN.

On the bottom, you can see a plus button which will allow you to add a new VPN profile. This is a fairly simple process. All you have to do is copy one of the free VPN server names from the website and Paste it in the “Server address” field in the form. You can give a name for the VPN profile that you are adding. Select PPP encryption only and enter the username and password as found on the website.

Note that these websites change the password for their VPN servers often so if you are unable to connect to their server after some time, do check their website and update and update password accordingly.

Once you have filled in all the details, tap on OK button the top right and you’re almost done. Now toggle the VPN button and within few seconds you should be connected to the VPN server. If you are unable to connect to the VPN server, you can always try to connect some other server following the same above steps.

So how would you make sure that you are on VPN? Just google “My IP” before and after connecting to VPN and it should show two different IP addresses. If you ever want to disconnect from VPN, you can always do it from the notification itself.
