Either of these headphones will impress you with overall good design and build quality. Compared to Bose QuietComfort 35, the cushions could have been a little bit better and softer but you will get used to it easily after a couple of days usage. The M40x weighs 240 grams where M50x weighs 285 grams. So definitely you’ll feel the M50x bit on the heavier side even though it is not terrible by any means especially compared to other over the ear headphones.
Both the ATH-M40x and M50x are very good headphones, these are sort of idea for people who like studio-grade quality. In this comparison, first, let’s look at the differences between the M40x and M50x.
  • The M40x headphones are slightly on the lighter side compared to M50x, but in most cases, you won’t notice the difference
  • The M40x driver is slightly smaller (40 mm) compared to the M50x driver (45 mm)
  • With M50x, you get one extra cable, which is a smaller one – ideal for you to use it with your MP3 players or smartphones whereas with m40x we get very long cables (3 meter’s long)
  • The ATH-M50x earcups can be rotated in either way 90 degrees, wherein M40x only one side rotation is allowed
  • Price difference: The M40x costs around $99.00 and you’ll get M50x for around $149.00 in the US via Amazon

Sound Quality

Sound quality on both headphones is really good. Both of them try to produce a natural sound signature which is close to flat. In M40x, the sound signature is close to flat wherein M50x it is even better and the sound is true to the recording. If you listen to music with M40x headphones it may not sound that great because it doesn’t emphasize the sound to add extra base or treble but pure and flat sound signature.

But if you are into activities like monitoring audio levels and recording levels and stuff, then the M40x  produces more pure sound.

Clarity: Both of them produces amazing sound clarity. You will start hearing things that you haven’t heard your music provided you are listening to high-quality music. Both of them in that respect is very good.

Coming to an M50x sound signature, it is not completely flat, it slightly emphasizes the base a little bit. This makes it qualifying for the music listening as well. But still, if you’re thinking you’ll get the extra boomy base, that’s not the case with neither of these headphones. The base will come when it is required, then it goes away. If you are looking for a completely flat sound signature, true to recording with no emphasizing whatsoever, M40x is for you. If you’re looking for general music listening too, then the emphasized base on M50x will help you achieve this.

Moving to the mid-tones, both of these headphones do a wonderful job. The vocals come out very lively, doesn’t make it muddy or gray, and even the treble tones are very well done. Overall, both M40x and M50x are an excellent pair of headphones, the notable thing is the difference in the sound signature which I stated earlier.
