Smart home assistants or Smart Speakers are becoming a new craze among the younger and older generation alike. They are essentially a butler for everything that can be done online, paid for life. Aiding you with your every need that can be fulfilled by technology, these little champion devices are bang for the bucks. The latest entry-level smart speaker to hit the Indian markets is the new Google nest Mini. Here we compare the product with the Amazon Echo Dot, its compatriot in the market in terms of price, ease to use, portability, connectivity, etc.

Design

There isn’t any significant difference between the Echo Dot and Google Nest Mini when it comes to their design

  • Both devices are meant for indoor uses and should preferably be placed in the same place all the time.
  • Neither has a remote control or a touch screen but has a control panel of buttons on the surface.
  • The fabric covering the Nest Mini is claimed to be made from recycled plastic by Google. There is no option to charge it via a battery and hence portability is out of the equation. It is meant to be kept in the same place all the time plugged into a socket. It can also be hanged on the wall with the hook on the back.

Sound Quality

  • As said before, neither smart speaker is meant for the use as speakers since none of them are equipped with any quality stereo speaker setups.
  • They have noise-canceling features enabled to pick up your commands even in noisy environments. EchoDot uses four microphones for this purpose whereas Google Nest Mini only uses three.
  • Both companies claim they give us privacy protection but I strongly believe these little spies are meant for snooping in on our private lives.

Connectivity

  • Both smart speakers use the fast 802.11 AC WI-FI connection. They work on the 5GHz frequency range offering better transfer rates, improved reliability, and improved power consumption.
  • The obvious improvement from the previous generation for the Nest Mini is the improved audio quality. Although it can be used as a speaker, if you are looking for just a speaker, many better alternatives are available in the market for its price range.
  • You can use the Google Nest mini to control the smart TVs, Fridges, and other smart devices in your home through voice commands. As always it works through Google Assistant and the ‘magic words’ are ‘OK Google’, You might have tried it with your Android phones before.
  • You can play songs, get weather updates, set alarms, listen to podcasts, etc. It supports Hindi as well so you can converse with it in Hindi. With a good internet connection, it can control other smart devices in your home.
  • Echo Dot has a socket for a 3.5mm audio jack for wired connection whereas the Google Nest Mini does not. You can control your music listening experience through voice commands. Be it, Amazon Prime Music, Spotify or any other music streaming service, all you need to do is ask the Echo Dot for the required song.
  • You can ask Alexa, the brain controlling the Echo Dot, Amazon’s very own smart virtual assistant, anything and everything related to online services from playing music, checking the weather forecast, googling for recipes, etc.
  • Echo Dot can work smoothly with all the smart devices in your home.
  • Amazon Alexa supports about 15 languages worldwide including Hindi, Spanish, French, etc. S0 would make perfect gifts for the generation and will aid them in their day to day lives.
  • You can connect Echo Dot to other speakers at your home through Bluetooth or a 3.5 mm audio cable.
  • Alexa is capable of picking up dialects and your vocabulary after using it for a while.

Verdict

Advantages of the second generation Google Nest Mini over the previous version

  • Better connectivity
  • Better audio quality
  • Faster processing time as a result of a new machine learning chip.
  • Ability to tweak the volume to an ambient level

There isn’t a lot of significant differences between the two virtual assistants/smart speakers. The Nest Mini costs a lot more than the Echo Dot now but the price difference may come down in the future. We will have to wait and see if any faults pop up after a while with the Google Nest Mini in the long run as the product just hit the market.
