Alcatel One Touch Idol X+ Quick Review

In the last year, Alcatel released the One Touch Idol X which offered some really nice hardware and specifications for very comparative price. Now the company is back with a more stunning device which is called Idol X+ exclusively available through the online retailer Flipkart for Rs 16,999. Lets take a look at the details of this phone weather it is value for money or not.

The One Touch Idol X+ doesn’t have the most unique design in the world, it has got the inspiration from some world class designs but we can say that this phone is not a bad looking device by any means. The construction is comprised of a combination of glassy plastic on the back which is somewhat very attractive to fingerprints and an aluminium frame that wraps around the perimeter of the phone that makes the phone very solid in the hand. It fairly light weight (125 grams) and thickness measuring 8.1 mm.

For a Smartphone in this price range, it is reasonable to expect a 1080p screen. The Idol X+ sports 5-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 resolution that will provide 441 ppi pixel density. The display is pretty vibrant, colours are in proper blend, not over saturated. Viewing angles are great, also brightness isn’t an issue so you could get best results while using outdoors.

On the inside the Idol X+ is rocking an octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor clocked at 2 GHz with 2 GB of RAM. For gaming and graphics intensive applications, a Mali 450 GPU is given and the device comes in two variants of 16/32 GB of internal storage. The processor is first of its kind and behave as a a true octacore processor which means all eight cores are actually firing at the same time which is different from what Samsung is doing where they use two quad cores alternating back and forth. Even if this processor sounds like an absolute beast on paper, but it is based on the Cortex A7 architecture which is pretty old one. Overall the performance of the idol X+ isn’t bad but it could be better. It performs usual operations like opening up apps and playing games but sometimes you may run into lags or frame drops and there is a lot of rendering issues even with the stock web browser.

The OS version could be a blame as its running on Android 4.2.2 JellyBean which isn’t a latest version of Android or even latest version of JellyBean. There’s no announcement from Alcatel about upgrading to a new software for this phone.

Battery Life

Despite of its performance issues its been solid in terms of battery backup. The phone holds a non-removable 2500 mAh battery which is average comparing many other phones.

Another attraction of Idol X+ is the 13 MP camera on the back. It’s got a simplistic and straight forward camera interface and basic enhancing features like HDR, Panorama etc. The camera is capable of taking very nice looking photos and very good colour reproduction is too good. It also does a decent job taking photos at low lights.

The OneTouch Idol X+ is a very decent smartphone in this category considering performance, battery backup, and camera. But It is based on a cheaper Mediatek processor and old Cortex A7 architecture. Also, keep in mind the low probability of software updates
