4 Ways to Speed Up Youtube Video Buffering

When is the most annoying part of browsing internet?. I am sure you will say it’s when you buffer videos that are posted on YouTube, Facebook. This is because most people around the globe uses slower internet connections, or the speed they currently have is not enough to stream a video without taking some time to buffer. A slower video buffer may either due to slower internet connection speed or slower delivery of the server that actually hosts that video. However Youtube servers are not that bad to buffer even low quality videos, it’s definitely upto your ISP most of the time. Do some of these tricks and tweaks to reduce the Youtube buffer time, keeping in mind that upgrading your connection will make a larger impact on video streaming.

1. Use the Best DNS Servers

Though you may already aware of DNS, it can make an impact on the YouTube performance. You can get faster downloads if you switch your default DNS provided by your ISP to a different one like OpenDNS or Google Public DNS. Google DNS servers is said to be speed up internet speed by optimizing the traffic routes between you and your destination servers. But this service also has some drawbacks that certain times it might direct you to a server that is farther than what your ISP suggests. So this would deccelerate rather than speeding up in certain websites.

2. Join YouTube Feather Beta

In 2013, YouTube has made a service available called “Feather” Beta to provide YouTube video watch pages with the lowest latency possible. As the name suggests, it is lightweight version of YouTube strip away unnecessary features and Gimmicks and  reduces the amount of data being sent to you every time you view a video. This technology may not work for all videos you watch but, it’s a Google made service intended for users with slower internet connections to watch videos without wasting time buffering a lot.

3. Use Video Accelerators

Although I would not recommend purchasing a costly software that claims speeding up streaming videos, some users had a positive response by using video accelerators like one from SPEEDbit. It can enhance video downloading speed from youtube and other popular sites like Break, Yahoo Video, Facebook, AOL Video, Dailymotion, MySpace etc. With SpeedBit video accelerator, you can accelerate videos upto 200KBps, beyond this need a premium purchase.

4. ISP Throttling

ISP throttling is nothing but action of your internet service provider to shape the internet traffic you use by slow down certain types of traffic, like BitTorrent traffic. Some ISP’s slow down their user’s internet if they download too much data in a month. The Glasnost project  provides some tests to know whether your ISP is making any restrictions on your connections for eg, for bitTorrent transfers.

The following command however blocks IP address of this content delivering network which forces YouTube to deliver videos without any ISP throttling.

  • Open start and type cmd then from the list, right click on the cmd and click ” Run as administrator”.
  • Copy this:

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name=”Youtubetweak” dir=in action=block remoteip=, enable=yes

  • Right click on command prompt window and select Paste where the cursor stands, hit enter.
  • It will display Ok, if it passes.

You can remove this tweak by entering the following Command

netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name=”Youtubetweak”

Try these above tricks and let me know if you got any improvements.
