If your laptop has an on board graphics and a dedicated graphics card,a problem may arise when you try to run 3D rendering utilities, video editing software and high end games where it may only detect the on board graphics and eventually resulting in a reduced performance which is obviously not why you paid the hefty price for the additional graphics card.
So how to solve this annoying problem that happens more often than you think. You buy a new laptop with a 4 GB dedicated graphics card and 16 GB RAM and install that new GTA 5 that you have been wanting to play for a long time only to find out that the game only detects the on board 256 MB graphic memory. So why does this happen?. The reason and solution for this problem maybe simpler than you think.
First of all check your display adapters:
Control panel>devices and printers>device manager>display adapters
You will find your on board graphics and the dedicated graphics card.
NOTE : You will only find the correct graphics card names here if you have the correct drivers installed.
REASON : USE 32 BIT DRIVERS FOR 32 BIT OS AND 64 BIT DRIVERS FOR 64 BIT OS.ALSO INSTALL 64 BIT OS ON YOUR 64 BIT PCs although a 32 bit OS may work on it.
The most likely reason why your game doesn’t detect your graphics card is probably because of the common 32 bit vs 64 bit confusion most basic PC users have.
Simply put, today computer processors have 32 bit and 64 bit architectures and therefore two different methods are available for writing the programs. You may have encountered problems like missing .dll files while installing your games. These dll files(Dynamic Link Libraries) are simply common resources that all the programs use.Windows have them stored together in a common place to make it easier for the program developers to access them.
And obviously the dll files are created differently for the 32 bit and 64 bit programs.Suppose a 64 bit program version tries to access the dll files which are written for the 32 bit version, it will stop responding.Imagine trying to read your favorite books in Chinese(unless you are from china),your brain simply will not identify the letters. Here the letters are the .dll files.
Using a PC with 8GB RAM with a 32 bit OS will not work.A 32 bit architecture can only handle 4GB RAM.
Check your OS version here.
Right click my computer(“This PC” for win 10 users) and select properties
You will find the OS version and processor architecture type here. For 32 bit processors it will be “x86-based processor”.
So coming back to my point, use 64 bit drivers for 64 bit PCs. Make sure you have the correct and latest version of your drivers installed. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY DOWNLOAD THE DRIVER FROM THE LAPTOP MANUFACTURER’S WEBSITE AND NOT THE GPU DEVELOPERS because the developer does not directly support the switchable graphics option. Also make sure you have the correct version OS installed.
There is no need to make the graphics card your primary display driver and waste your time changing your PC settings. If the correct versions of the OS and the drivers are installed, your video rendering software or your game will automatically detect the graphics card.
NOTE: Do not mess with your BIOS settings because your graphics card is not being detected. That definitely is not the reason why you can’t play that game.
