There was a time when I used to put my smartphone in 2G only mode. This was simply because 3G services were not common back in 2012 so that I can save some battery if I use 2G only mode. But nowadays people cant even think about living without a 3G or 4G connection on their smartphone. There are times when you go to a place where 2G and 3G networks are neck and neck and your phone continuously switches between 3G and 2G. This happens bet ween 2G and 4G connections too. So you wish you could avoid the automatic network switch and stay in the 3G or 4G network without slowing down the data speed. My first smartphone Samsung Galaxy Ace had the feature of putting it in 3G only mode. But now I use a Xiaomi Mi smartphone (Redmi Note 3) running MIUI which simply does not allow you to do this – by default. Here’s how you can overcome this limitation. How to set 3G only or 4G only mode in MIUI based Xiaomi Mi smartphones

What are the options by default MIUI gives?

If you are using any MIUI based Xiaomi smartphones like Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4 etc, you have access to the preferred network type settings by going to Settings > SIM card settings > SIM1/SIM2 > Preffered network type.

Usually it displays these three options:

  • Prefer LTE
  • Prefer 3G
  • 2G only (saves battery)

defauly network modes in miui

The default selection for any sim card would be the first option (LTE)  but as you can see there is no selection for 3G only or 4G only.

How to Enable WCDMA only / LTE only

There is no direct option to do it. But you can do it easily by accessing the testing and phone info options. There are two ways how you can access the phone info.

  • Dial *#*#4636#*#* from your phone dialer  or
  • Go to Settings > About phone tap continuously on “Internal memory” 4 times.

It doesn’t matter which way you access it. You will get a screen like below.

access miui phone info

  • Phone Information1 is related to SIM 1
  • Phone Information2 is related to SIM 2

Tap on the sim you wanted to change the network settings. You will get a screen with a bunch of information regarding your SIM and network.

Find the section Set proffered network type. Here you can find almost all possible combinations of network modes. Some network types may not even applicable for yoour handset model. So make your selection carefully

  • To set the SIM in 3G only mode, choose WCDMA only
  • For 4G only, choose LTE only

change network to any mode

Now immediately the netwok should get changed to the proffered network type. If you dont remember the default selection after changing it to something you are not sure of, change the selection to following.

  • TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE (Valid for India)

You dont need to restart your phone to make this change into effect. Make sure you are aware of what you are changing in the other options otherwise there is  a chance that you will mess things up.

    1. It could mean that your area doe not have 3G or 4G coverage. Check with your operator and make sure your area has 3G/4G coverage that your mobile supports.

    2. remove sim card 2 and put the only sim 1 in slot 1

After that you will see all the available signals of sim networks so just select 4g or 3g that you want and you are good to go.
