Wikipedia foundation has announced a partnership with the Indian mobile service provider aircel to allow access Wikipedia for free on mobile phones. It means that if you’ve a mobile phone that has aircel SIM card, you would be allowed to access Wikipedia without levying any data charges. This is a kind of deal which airtel was given facebook free for their users in past.
As per the studies, very large part of internet users are browsing through mobile phones. Wikipedia foundation expects about 60 million new users from India by giving this zero roll out. Customers of aircel can access Wikipedia website in English, Hindi and other 18 major Indian languages.
The mobile users can access two websites
- m.wikipedia.org which is the mobile version of Wikipedia
- zero.wikipedia.org , text only version of the mobile site ideal for slow connections
The new move from these two companies will benefit themselves as well as vast amount of internet users as they can explore the largest information and knowledge storage without being charged. The contract of the two companies is valid for three years.
